Ladies and gentleman we have our finalist for the great Heisman trophy. This Saturday we will find out who will take home the most prestigious award in college football but for now let’s take a look at the finalist starting with the front runner for it all Baker Mayfield.
Baker Mayfield
This man walks in to New York Saturday already making history without even receiving the award yet. He is the 7th player to finish in the top 5 of the Heisman voting’s 3 times. He is trying to become the 6th player from Oklahoma (3rd quarterback besides Sam Bradford and Jason White) to win the Heisman since 2003 and he is the 9th player from Oklahoma to be a finalist for the award tying Miami for most by one school. But this season alone is definitely his most impressive one.
Mayfield led the Sooners to a 12-1 record and a Big 12 championship and of course he will be making a run for the National Championship playing in the Semifinals against Georgia in the rose bowl. Mayfield also led the nation in passing efficiency and even broke his own record from 2016. He completed 715 of his passes and threw for an astounding 4,340 and 41 touchdowns. He is also a finalist for the Davey O’ Brien award and the Maxwell award.
Lamar Jackson
This is familiar territory for the former Heisman winner Lamar Jackson as once again he is back in the spotlight that he really never left while everyone was focused on these other teams. Lamar is looking to become the 2nd player to win 2 Heisman trophies since Ohio States own Archie Griffin. Lamar’s numbers have improved in some categories but Louisville went 8-4 this season with no significant wins which will definitely hurt his chances at winning the award. But on the bright side Lamar had a more efficient year this year than last which will help his draft stock. He completed 64% of his passes while throwing almost 9 yards per completion. He also averaged 411 total yards which led the nation.
Bryce Love
Bryce love had a great year running the football and the most impressive part is that he did it on a severe ankle injury. The Stanford running back was 2nd in the nation in rushing including 10 games where he rushed over 100 yards. He averaged 8.3 yards per carry and 17 touchdowns to go along with that. One amazing stat that he put up is that he led the nation in most 50 yard runs with 12 this season.
Sadly Saquon Barkley did not make the cut but he fell off in the end with Penn State suffering 2 losses and his production going down. Another running back that should have been considered as well was San Diego State’s Rashaad Penny. He led the nation in rushing (168.9) and all-purpose yards(224.8) along with big games against Stanford and Arizona State.
